Remember that we are dust, and to dust we shall return

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent for Christians.

The blessing bestowed on recipients of the ash during Ash Wednesday mass and services is taken from the book of Genesis:

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Taking a second to remember that we are finite beings, that our time here in the world is a short one, might be difficult to bear.

But it can also be liberating.

Gary Vee (Gary Vaynerchuk, the American entrepreneur and social media icon) was once asked by a passerby on the street for three words of inspiration.

He replied without hesitation, “You’re gonna die.”

There’s a cartoon with Charlie Brown and Snoopy that I love.

— “Some day we’re all going to die, Snoopy!” says Charlie.

— “True,” says Snoopy, “but on all the other days, we will not.”
